ΚΟΙΣΠΕ - KOISPE

History

During the early 90’s in the Leros State Hospital, as a result of the general reforms in the psychiatric care, the first therapeutic activity units were established with main target the social and work rehabilitation of the patients.

Soon it was very clear that the positive results of the units went hand in hand with a general improved mental state and social behavior of the employed patients.

It was a start of a new approach in Greece that finally resulted in Social Cooperatives (KoiSPE), a work rehabilitation formula, legislated in a new Health Law (N2716/99) in 1999.

The preparatory was taken on by the support program “Special Action” for Leros, who in cooperation with the Leros State Hospital organized information meetings and developed a business plan.

From Jan. 2002 a work group of the LSH takes over and proceeds to the necessary legal actions in order to establish the first Social Cooperative in Greece:

  • Establishment application to the Ministry of Health
  • 15/5/02 it was approved in terms of feasibility
  • Meetings with candidate members
  • June 2002 constituent Assembly
  • The development and the approval of the Statute by the County Court
  • Preparation of the first General Assembly which took place at 23-11-2002.
